Passive pickups

A passive pickup uses a coil and a magnet to generate a magnetic field. When the strings are struck, this magnetic field is altered and in the coil, voltage is induced. This signal is then tansmitted to the amplifier.

By contrast, active pickups have a small built-in pre-amp. Pre-amps are built into pickups to regulate volume and tone (see under active pickups).
