Mike Prince from Laura Steel

Mike playing at the 2010 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, London.Michael (Mike) Prince is an English musician, born in Shropshire, England in June 1990. From a young age Mike was always interested in music and picked up piano at the age of 9.

After studying music at school he chose to switch to the bass during his first year of college, where he studied A levels in Music and Music Technology. After studying in college Mike auditioned to study a degree in bass at BIMM (the Bristol Institute of Modern Music) where he was tutored by Stuart Clayton.

“Studying at BIMM under the hand of Stuart Clayton has helped me be the best musician I can possibly be, and if I hadn’t of studied there I doubt I would be in the position I am today”.

After playing bass for just 4 years Mike graduated with distinction in his Foundation Degree, and immediately after completing this he auditioned for the role of bassist with new upcoming London based singer / songwriter Laura Steel.

At that time in June 2010 Laura was confirmed to play at the Wireless Festival in Hyde Park supporting the likes of Jay-Z, Friendly Fires, Slash, Eliza Doolittle and many more successful acts. The audition was successful and Mike is now a permanent member of her band, working with fellow Shropshire friend and guitarist, Conrad Snook.

“Conrad was actually a friend of my brother’s, and during my Easter break from university my brother suggested that I should get together with Conrad for a jam. A few weeks later I got a call from Conrad explaining that I should come to London for an audition with Laura – 4 months later here I am!”

Laura and the band have been busy this year after playing many gigs, 2 UK regional tours and writing and recording the album.

“We are currently in the studio working with Denis Ingoldsby, Andrew Murray and Paul Cheese recording the album which should debut mid 2011.”

Mike came to Schaller in August 2010 asking for some support as he has always used Schaller strap locks on his beloved Status Graphite bass guitars.
“Schaller’s strap locks and guitar hardware are by far the best in the business, and I swear by it! My deepest thanks go out to Lars and everyone at Schaller for their continued support.”
